Because maternally and paternally derived X chromosomes may contain different alleles for the same trait, adult females are in a sense genetic mosaics, where different alleles function in different cells. X-chromosome mosaicism is reflected in the patchwork coloration of the fur of some mammals, including calico cats. Pigmentation genes in humans are not located on the X chromosome, hence the absence of “calico women.”
